How Do You Buy Antique Furniture?

Do You Want To Buy Antique Furniture?

Here Are A Few Great Tips To Guide You!

Many people buy antique furniture to decorate their homes or offices, or as an enjoyable hobby, others buy them purely as an investment.

If you plan to pursue the purchase of antique furniture seriously, you should go armed with a few important tips...here they are...

*Authenticity: when you set out to buy antique furniture, determining a piece's authenticity can be a critical component, simply because there are loads of reproductions in the world.

Authenticating a piece can be done in a number of ways...

Learn about how furniture was conctructed in past centuries. If you are interested in a piece, take note of whether there are any screws; screws began to be used only in the last part of the nineteeth century. However, different types of nails are found in furniture that was made in several periods of history.

If you find a piece you like, check to see that the width of the wood used in making it are not exactly the same size. If it has any age, some of the boards would have shrunk slightly. Also, an authentic piece of furniture would have some discolor on it's surfaces due to variances in it's exposure to sunlight and temperature changes. There should be visible differences in the overall appearance of it's color, unless it was refinished or repainted.

Also, check the corners and edges to see if there are rough spots anywhere; early pieces were made by hand and furniture makers used only handsaws to cut the wood. Also, note the hardware... is it all the same or are there any differences, have some (or all) been replaced?

*Style: when you buy antique furniture, you'll find that antique dealers, auctioneers and sellers categorize their antique funiture through style names such as Queen Anne Furniture, Antique Victorian Furniture, etc. Usually, style plays avery big part in determining value.

Antique furniture pieces having the style and design that originated in previous centuries are considered far more valuable than those of recent times. Also, the rarer or more unique the style and design is, the more expensive the piece will be.

Additionally, there are many designs that have been popularized by notable craftsmen or furniture manufacturers. Pieces having those popular designs, including those that just resemble them, may even be more expensive than the average antique furniture piece.

*Age: age is a prime consideration when you want to buy antique furniture or collect it. Usually, the more age a piece has, the more valuable it is. Some of the most celebrated periods in furniture construction are The Chippendale Period (mid-to-late 1700s), The Empire Period (1830 – 1850) and The Victorian Period (1850 – 1910). Note that you can identify the age of an antique furniture piece according to its style and design.

However, antique buyers and collectors should take note that, in some cases, the appearance, design, and functionality of a piece replaces the value that's given to it because of it's age. This is often true with tables, chairs, cabinets, wardrobes, and other large furniture pieces that are functional and not used merely for display and interior decorating purposes.

Also, when antique furniture pieces are the work of a well known designer or furniture maker, the value of their work increases, along with their furniture’s design.
